What the Supernatural Community Knows
Fifty years ago was the height of power for most things that had power beyond the comprehensions of mere mortals. Prey for monsters never had any idea what was hunting them, so they never, ever thought to fight back. Wizards could sit in their cloisters and harness their power. The fae could swindle mortals out of their dearest possessions and could leave changelings all over the mortal realm without any concern. And then, Harry Dresden, Warden of the White Council and Winter Knight, ruined things for everybody.
No one knows for sure who summoned the Outsider into the mortal realm. Most aren’t even sure that Dresden didn’t do it himself— after all, he was the only mortal who had the power and the unnatural gift to interact with Outsiders and not die in the attempt. All they know for sure is that when the Outsider split the sky, smaller outsiders slipped through and began to wreck havoc on the city. Vampires, ghouls and demons went on the feeding frenzy, driven mad by the power of the Outsiders. Minor spellcasters who were part of something called the Paranet went out to try and reign in the chaos, but they were confronted by more significant spellcasters and a building mob of panicked mortals. When the mortals began lashing out at anything they didn’t understand, many of the Paranet had to try and keep things in check.
The Wardens were called to investigate what Dresden was doing at Demonreach. Not knowing what was truly happening, they opted to stay on land by the lake and keep others from reaching the tower. Many other beings, even Queen Mab herself, went to investigate, or to try and control the outsider for themselves. Representatives of both the Summer and the Winter Court went, as did the few surviving members of the Red and Black Courts, and the White Court and the Denarians had a strong presence. Some of the Alphas and at least one of the Knights of the Cross were present, too. People seemed to switch sides on a whim. In-fighting between courts could often take precedence over the more pressing needs to stop or protect Dresden. Some claim this was due to the petty nature of the monsters’ natures, others claimed that the Outsider somehow had affected them all. Queen Mab died in the struggle.
Dresden also seemed to die in the struggle. Some believe it was his own spell that killed him. Others believe that when the mortal soldiers stormed the tower, they created enough chaos for someone on Demonreach to kill Dresden themselves. The mortal soldiers and every faction of the Supernatural, every Court, every Council, major players and minor players, and even factions that wouldn’t come about until years after the Crack, all of these claim responsibility for Dresden’s death. Some, however, particularly those associated with the Paranet hold out hope that Dresden is still alive, and is just hiding. However, since Mab’s death and the Crack, the Winter Court declared a new Winter Knight. He did not last through the Purge, and another Knight was chosen. Rumor has it that Fix, the Summer Knight is growing too old to keep his mantle.
